Adobe have opened the (virtual) doors on the world's first ever digital museum, designed by architect Filippo Innocenti. With a mission to showcase and preserve groundbreaking digital media, it is, as current curator Tom Eccles has proclaims "a museum quite unlike any other".
It will eventually contain 17 zones showing "the good, the bad and the ugly of how we have explored and used technology in our time". An appetite whetting promise of things to come because the museum content is a little sparse to date. The first artist 'exhibition', by Tiny Ourseler, is called 'Valley' and is, on the whole, a little indulgent and a bit disappointing. John Maeda's forthcoming 'Digital evolution' exhibit should be a lot more content rich and interesting.
It's a great concept and holds out a lot of promise as a digital hub of great creativity, though the current incarnation is a too heavy handed on trying to look technological and futuristic with irritating 'whoosh' noises and a tiresome computer generated voice over which really just get in the way of appreciating and enjoying the content. A bit of a false start – here's hoping thing's improve!
