Rupert Murdoch recently launched his new publication The Daily, an iPad-only magazine that hopes to offer readers "the best of traditional journalism" with "the best of contemporary technology". The Daily features many things we've come to expect from new digital publications such as interactive 360 degree photography, inline video, orientation-independant layout and navigation designed specifically for the tablet. It also has some new features like an audio version recorded with a professional voice-over.
But The Daily introduces something much bigger than these features which we've seen before in iPad publications like Wired and Project. Just like the name suggests, content is pushed directly to the iPad every day using a new in-app subscription model that was developed for The Daily (and presumably other future publications) by Apple. Subscribers pay $.99 per week or $39.99 annually.
If publishers weren't already excited about producing for the iPad this new subscription service will make sure they are. Expect to see another wave of new subscription-based newspapers and magazines coming to the App Store in the next few months. The Daily is free for it's first two weeks and is currently only available on the US App Store.
